Gemma Carder
Senior Manager for Global Research
Brooke Action for Working Horses and Donkeys
Speaker Bio:
Gemma Carder is a Senior Manager for Global Research at Brooke, an international charity dedicated to improving the welfare of working horses, donkeys and mules, and the livelihoods of the people who depend on them. In this role, she co-leads the organisation’s Global Research Strategy (2023–2028), collaborating with colleagues and partners worldwide to design and deliver research that generates practical, evidence-based insights. These findings support Brooke’s programmes, influence policy, and strengthen advocacy for working animals and the communities they serve. Previously Gemma has conducted research across a wide range of animal welfare issues. This has included field studies on farm animal husbandry and welfare assessment, wildlife trade, and research exploring how animal health and welfare intersect with human wellbeing. Her work often involves designing and leading studies, analysing datasets, and translating findings into recommendations that can be implemented in real-world settings. She is particularly interested in approaches that combine scientific rigour with local knowledge, ensuring solutions are relevant and feasible at scale. She values the opportunity to connect scientific research with tangible change. At the heart of her work is a belief that good evidence, shared openly, can help ensure animals are recognised, respected, and included in decisions that affect their welfare.
